While we spend most of our time explaining to our customers where the name "Schitty Canoe Company" came from, we also tend to explain to folks how fantastic inflatable kayaks are. Inflatable kayaks have come a long way since the little 30 dollar kayak you could buy at a big box store meant for one or two weekends of use. Yes, the big box stores are carrying a much better inflatable these days but, many companies out there have really stepped up the game. Companies like STAR, AIRE and Rocky Mountain Rafts manufacture whitewater grade kayaks that will last for years if they are taken care of. Schitty Canoe Company decided to experiment with inflatables for our rental fleet and let me tell you, the response was through the roof. We have a fleet of about 10 RMR inflatable and 4 SOL kayaks by SOL Paddleboards, they are the exact same design and build and out of the hundreds of rentals we have only had 1 complaint. A sweet old lady that rented one told us that she was so comfortable in it she couldn't get out of it but, loved that boat otherwise. So, we thought we would give you the run down of the Rocky Mountain Rafts inflatable kayak models.

So, in case you have not already noticed, get ready for a wild ride of poor grammar, spelling and punctuation as we take you on a little trip with these sweet ass kayaks.

Rocky Mountain Rafts "IK-152" inflatable kayak. "A floating recliner"

Rocky Mountain Raft offers 4 different models of inflatable kayaks well, basically 2 models with each model offering tandem or solo options. The Animas series is designed for the more avid whitewater paddler who is going to be hitting that serious whitewater. The Animas series will come with the ability to add thigh straps to keep you cinched in the boat while your hitting those big waves and fast rapids.

We went with the more peaceful and simpler version, "Taylor". The IK-126 solo and the IK-152 models. Now, after a season of owning these we noticed that solo floaters liked the tandem version better due to the ability to carry larger coolers and use the front backrest to kick the feet feet up and watch the day float by. As far as durability?, I have cringed watching these be drug up boat ramps when we first started using them but noticed that they are taking more abuse in some areas and lasting longer then the few plastic boats we do have in our fleet.

The Taylor series inflatable kayak is about as basic as you can get when it comes to accessories and features which makes them a perfect platform to customize if you are planning on picking one up for personal use. D-rings and tie down points can be added on at any location on the kayak making it easy to customize for any type of gear. Maybe you are taking it on a multi-day trip down a faster body of water?, maybe you just want the biggest damn cooler you can fit to go with you on that short Saturday party float? regardless the possibilities or endless.

Design

We don't call them "Banana Boat" boats for nothing, the design of these kayaks are strictly for river. Yes, you can paddle them on flat water and they are a blast due to the stability of them but the haul shape is best suited for the river. The the Banana shape "Rocker" these kayaks are highly maneuverable on moving water, especially whitewater. They do not track very well on flat water because it's design is essentially set up for pivot style turns. The just means you will be paddling back and forth a little more to keep it going straight on no moving water.

The floor system in the Taylor kayak is the exact same type of floor you would see a stand up paddleboard be constructed out of...... Drop stitch, this type of design allows for the floor to be inflated at a much higher pressure adding rigidity and stiffness to the boat "it won't be all floppy on your the whole day". The floor is also self bailing so you will not be sitting in pools of water all day.

The backrest is oddly where we have noticed the Taylor shines, a simple tube allows for multiple seating options. 1. as normal just sit with your back up against the inflatable tube. 2. You can actually sit directly on the tube giving you about 8 inches of added visibility when you are trying to spot that next fish. 3. slide your arse back, put the tube behind your neck, kick your feet over the sides and let the river do all the work, and with a simple reach behind you, you can grab your favorite drink and enjoy the river.

The Taylor series inflatable kayak is constructed from a dense PVC material and RMR uses a welded seam build instead of glued seams which result in a much more durable build. RMR also offers a 6 year retail warranty giving you piece of mind that they stand behind their products.
